Buy a ticket and win a great bike at this year's Faire on the Square

This year's Faire on the Square will feature a bike raffle sponsored by the Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee. The money raised from the raffle supports the Safe Routes to School initiative in Watertown elementary schools.

The bike to be awarded to the raffle winner is a terrific kid's mountain bike. The rugged Specialized Hotrock 20 features seven speeds and front shocks. With 20" wheels, this bike is great for kids between 6 and 10 years old.

Tickets for the raffle are $1 each, and will be available at the Faire. If you'd like to purchase tickets before the Faire, send email to watertown.bikeped@gmail.com. The drawing will be held at the Faire. It is not necessary to be present at the time of the drawing.

WBPC acknowledges the help and support of the Hosmer School PTO and Wheelworks Too in making this raffle possible.

Story Walk Comes to Watertown

What's a story walk? A story walk is a series of signs spaced not too far apart, each of which displays a page from a children's book. The signs are installed in public places like parks and school yards. The idea is that kids walk from page to page, i.e. sign to sign, in order to read the book. In this way, kids combine reading with physical activity.

Watertown has two story walks this fall, one installed at Fillipello Park, and the other at Arsenal Park. The two books chosen are by distinguished children's author D. B. Johnson: Henry Hikes to Fitchburg, and Henry Climbs a Mountain. Johnson is renowned for his superb artwork and gentle story lines. The Massachusetts locale makes them perfect choices for the story walks.

The walks are intended for the 4-7 year old age group. So get out and enjoy them this fall.

The Watertown Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee extends its sincere thanks to Staples and Sterrit Lumber for their generous support of this project.
