"Hubway Stations" coming in July

An interesting item just came across my e-mail from Congressman Michael Capuano.  This references a much anticipated Boston/Cambridge deployment of Bicycle Sharing.  Boston will be the sixth major US city to provide a Bicycle Sharing program.  The others are Chicago, Denver, Minneapolis, Miami and Washington.

Bike Sharing

Last week I joined Mayor Menino at the official launch for the City of Boston’s bike share program, Hubway. This initiative will make 600 bikes available at 61 locations throughout the city. Those interested can sign up for membership, which will then make the bikes available for use. A rental under 30 minutes will be free and for a nominal fee the bikes will be available for longer periods of time. This program will make bikes available to city residents who may not have the space to store their own bike, occasional riders, and tourists. Boston joins Paris and other great cities in an environmentally friendly and healthy initiative.

By searching for "Hubway Boston" a couple of news items came up:

City of Boston Announcement
Harvard to Sponsor Five Hubway Stations
A Promising Sign for Bicycle Sharing

The "Hubway" will be administered by Alta Bicycle Share, a Portland Oregon based company.  These are the same people who do the Capital Bikeshare in Washington D.C.  http://www.altabicycleshare.com/

The Alta website says the first "Hubway Stations" will be available in July.  I'm curious about how long it will take to bring this bike sharing program into Watertown.  I'm sure the fine folks of Somerville are thinking the same thing.
